New firmware for Neuros Recorder!

Neuros MPEG-4 RecoderNeuros has officially released firmware upgrade 2.0.12, which fixes the PSP incompatibility problem, as well as introducing a whole bunch of new and exciting features!

For those who are unfamiliar with the Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder it is essentially an easy-to-use, free-standing VCR that records onto digital memory cards instead of VHS tapes so that the video recorded is playable directly on the PSP (as well as other mobile devices such as the video ipod), Well, at least it used to work like this, until Sony released firmware 2.7 This rendered the Neuros player redundant as any recordings made with the device wouldn’t play back on the PSP anymore :(

This new firmware release fixes this problem as well as adding the following functionality;

  • Fixed the issue that rendered recorded files unplayable on PSP firmware version 2.7
  • Fixed the issue of low volume playback of recorded video on PSP. The audio is now 30% louder
  • Added recording options for smartphone, cellphone, and PDA. The new options are 176×120-15fps; 320×240-15fps. The application of TCPMP with AAC plug-in is highly recommended to play the videos on smartphones and PDAs. The video format is MP4, and the video quality depends on the computing power of your smartphone and cellphone
  • Added the recording options for iPod: 320×240 Fine (1024kbps) & Superfine (1536kbps) for superior video playback

You can read more about the problem and solution in the company’s press release

Crisis Core update

The latest issue of the Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, has an update on the much anticipated Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. The main character won’t be Cloud this time around. Instead, the player will play as Cloud’s close comrade Zack who died in the original game while trying to kill Sephiroth. Famitsu also pointed out that Angeal will make an appearance.

Of coarse, Sephiroth will be in the game as will Tseng. Sephiroth is the main villain as usual and Tseng is the a high ranking officer among the Turks.

The game will play out just like a regular role-playing game. However, Director Hajime Tabata did note that it will feature a different gameplay system that is still being tweaked for balance. Supposedly this new gameplay system will make Crisis Core different from what you would expect.

MGS: Portable Ops

GameSpot has posted a hands-on preview of Konami’s upcoming Metal Gear Solid game for the PSP titled “Portable Ops.” The preview covers the multiplayer functions of the game and boy does it sound good! As stated it our previous post about Portable Ops, this game isn’t just a spin-off of the Metal Gear series. Portable Ops is going to be a full on Solid game with the classic real-time Solid gameplay. For those who like Metal Gear but hated Acid’s card battling system, this game is definitely going to get you excited.

Portable Ops will include multiplayer gameplay via ad-hoc and infrastructure. Metal Gear Solid: Online, which was first introduced in the special addition Metal Gear Solid 3: Substance, is going to be integrated into Portable Ops. You will be able to compete against other players all over the world over the internet.

We got to go a few rounds in a four-player deathmatch mode as the producer of the game provided some detail about some of the differences (often while shooting us in the face–he was playing along with three others). Essentially this is the Metal Gear Solid 3 gameplay you’d expect if you’ve played Metal Gear Online as part of Subsistence. The underlying mechanics are nearly identical to the PS2 version, and we were relieved to find that the camera controls already seemed quite good. The analog stick is used to run in any direction, while the D-pad is used to rotate your view around your character. The left trigger snaps the view behind your back if you need to reorient yourself, and when the character would obstruct the camera angle (such as when his back is to a wall), he becomes transparent so you can see.

Silent Hill Origins

We finally have details on the Silent Hill PSP game. Origins was at E3 this year, and is set for release this winter.

You play as a truck driver passing through Silent Hill, Travis O’Grady. A few of the characters that are returning to the game are Dahlia, Dr. Kaufman and Alessa, and each will have some questions answered in the game. The game, of course, will not answer all the questions in the series, but will give you a sense of the twisted town’s history.

Origins will have a new camera system designed for the PSP which is supposed to make the player more aware, and will also have new “cineractive” moments, intense cinematics where you make Travis dodge or attack in relation to what is going on in the cinematic. The game brings back many of the classic monsters, and looks promising in the fear department.

This game is for sure on my must-buy list, I loved all the console games.

Coded Arms: Contagion

Despite lukewarm reviews for the first game, Konami is creating a sequel to for Coded Arms titled “Contagion.” Contagion will boast a new story line with all new characters and fully customizable controls. The major upgrade is the addition of infrastructure play for up to eight players.

Coded Arms 2 thrusts players into a new cybernetic crisis where they must use their hacking abilities and an arsenal of high-powered weaponry to survive. As a lone security agent players will return to A.I.D.A., a virtual reality military training program, to prevent cyber-terrorists from taking control of the program and gaining access to classified military information. The hackers believe that AIDA shouldn’t be restricted for only government use. The agent must use his abilities and combat skills to disinfect AIDA from the hacker-introduced virus so he can escape the system. Across a variety of enclosed and open-air levels, players will take on original enemies with an all-new selection of firearms and explosives that lets them counter the terrorist menace with more firepower than ever before. Up to eight players can go head-to-head in the game’s new online multiplayer modes.
