We all know what it’s like to upload a 700MB movie onto our PSP’s memory stick – 20 to 30 minutes of thumb twiddling… that is until now. SanDisk have announced a nifty little gadet that allows you to slide your PSP memory stick into your home computer’s USB slot, allowing for significantly faster data transfer.

Everyone who owns a PSP knows that the 32 MB memory stick included in the basic PSP pack is not really cutting it if you want to take full advantage of Sony’s handheld console. If you like to use your PSP for anything more than just playing games, sooner or later you will have to buy a memory stick with bigger storage capabilities.

SanDisk has already been selling 256 MB, 512 MG, 1 and 2 GB Memory sticks for a while and has now launched the Memory Stick Pro Duo with a 4 GB capacity available at several stores for around $200.

In July SanDisk will launch the Rapid GX Memory Stick Pro Duo, which will allow you to transfer data to and from the PSP a lot faster. According to this Gamespot review about PSP accessories, the first Rapid GX card will be available in July and will have 1 GB storage.

This is great news for people like me who spends about 3 hours each weekend swapping and changing my movies on my 2GB sticks. Sweet!

Whether you’re an 80′s kid like myself, or a young whippersnapper who’s fancied playing the original arcade games in the comfort of your own home, then say hello to MAME4ALL PSP v0.0.3.

In case you’re not au fait with the world of MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), it allows you to play the ROM dumps from the original arcade PCBs, meaning you get to play the original games from the arcades, not some half-baked ported version. Many versions of MAME have been around for quite some time – MacMAME being my own flavor of choice… until now… as this fabulous new release works on 2.xx firmware using Fanjita’s eLoader! YES! At last, you can now run MAME on your 2.xx PSP!

Kech, has once again updated his port of MAME4ALL for the PSP to v0.0.3 with the aid of Sazuke2911, Chui and Franxis. MAME4ALL is an emulation of arcade video games, allowing you to play all those favourites from yesteryear. So if you’re one of those who value old-school, of if you’re a young ‘un who wants to see how cool the games back then were, give this one a go.

This latest version contains the following updates:
Added – full screen only in ‘HW Scale’ Option (does not work for all the games)
Added – analog control
Added – further support for ROMS
Bug Fix – The memory that impeded the regeneration and left sectors of the ROMS without cleaning
other misc small bug fixes

The working list of ROMs is very limited – I didn’t try a great deal (perhaps about 30 of my collection of 4,000+) of them to work, but I was overjoyed to get Puckman (the original Pac-Man arcade game) and Ghosts ‘n Goblins to work, at full speed and with full sound emulation, using the eLoader on my 2.60.

This latest release has made me happier than a pig in poop.

You can rub your eyes as much as you want folks… you read it correctly – homebrew on ALL firmware, including 2.71. Thanks to the much talked about Epsilon BIOS development for the coveted Undiluted Platinum chip, every firmware version has the ability to run homebrew straight from the memory stick. The BIOS is a custom replacement flash for the Undiluted Platinum chip, therefore to be able to reap the benefits from the Epsilon BIOS, one must have had the mod chip installed also. Here’s what the fine chaps over at QJ.net had to say about this exciting development:

After showcasing the Undiluted Platinum Packaging and Components yesterday a reader going by the name “France World Cup Champion!” posted a link to a video that was quite striking. Without getting ahead of ourselves, this video shows us the Epsilon Bios flashed onto the Undiluted Platinum Modchip. Similar to the massive compatibility that is enabled when using Devhook, the prototype modchips were sent out to the team in order to test for possibilities in making a custom bios which would allow multiple firmware features without the need for switching firmware (or reflashing).

Starting off simply enough, as most PSP videos do, we go through the standard motions of showing what firmware the PSP is running [ 2.71 ]. Then we move over to the games menu and boot Loco Roco off the Memory Card. I’m sure I dont have to mention this but this was not possible previously on any firmware above 1.50. We see the game boot up to the main screen flawlessly and then quit back to the main PSP menu by pressing Home and accepting the changes. Notice the Epsilon logo in the top left corner.

Next very calmly scrolling down to select Attack of the Mutants [AOTM], a homebrew game which won awards at one of our past PSP Homebrew Competitions. This homebrew also boots up without a hitch. Note here that it would appear other applications and homebrew display without any corrupt icons that some 1.5 users have gotten use to.

Finally quitting back to the main menu we scroll down to Me and My Katamari. A quick click the game loads up (dare I say faster then it does on my 1.5 via Devhook?) We see the menu screen flash quickly and show the main menu for Me and My Katamari. With a quick flip the PSP is turned over and we see that there is no UMD in the drive.

Epsilon Bios and Undiluted Platinum combine for the ultimate PSP homebrew experience.

With the development of this custom Epsilon firmware, frankly we here at QJ are all really excited. Finally we can announce that all users will be able to play ALL homebrew regardless of what firmware came installed originally on their PSP, (or if their “little brother” upgraded it while they were gone). It should be noted that there is one PSP version that is incompatible at this time, however the Undiluted Platinum team is working to solve this issue so keep your eyes and ears tuned to QJ for your latest dose.

link to video (youtube.com – 3mins 37secs)

This finally breaks the seal on Sony’s attempt to stop those that enjoy legitimate homebrew to play homebrew.

[disclaimer: the ripping, collection or distribution of game ISOs is illegal, and therefore not condoned by the PGR Network]

Finally, a working (albeit limited functionality due to its beta release) Atari Emulator for the PSP that runs on Fanjita’s superlative eLoader (up to firmware 2.60!) – say hello to PSPAtari v1.0.1 (beta). I ran this on my own PSP to test, and the roms load beautifully, but the emulator lacks sound in this beta release – the emulator’s full specs as follows:

Zx-81, from pspupdate’s forums, has released a beta of PSPAtari, an emulator for the Atari 800/800XL/130XE/5200. This release is a port for the PSP from the original author, Petr Stehlik.

Controls:
Square – Fire2
X – Fire1
Circle – Space
L – Escape
R – Start
Start + L + R – Exit emulator
Select – Main menu enter
Start – Open/Close on-screen keyboard

It is important to note, that PSPAtari is a first beta release and as such much work still remains to improve the emulator including sound support, changing hardware type (at the moment you can only rum Atari 800 ROMS), resizing the screen etc etc

PSPAtari is compatible on all PSP firmware up to v2.6. Please see the readme.txt included in the download for further instructions.

It’s great to see the higher range of Pro Duo memory becoming more affordable than filling your gas tank.
