Rumor - New Design for PSP?

PSPsurvey

The fact that Sony sent out a massive survey a couple of days ago has prompted all sorts of wild rumors that there is a major redesign in the works for the PSP. The survey included all sorts of questions, including:

Which of the following would enhance the PSP system the most?(only a few of the options are listed below)
- Cellular Phone/VoIP capabilities
- Hard drive
- Keyboard for easier text entry
- Interoperability with the PlayStation 3
- Radio
- GPS
- Digital Video Camera

Would you buy another PSP system if it included a hard drive and/or video out?

I haven’t seen the survey myself, but Kotaku reported that the question about the most desirable add-on (the HDD) was mentioned a couple of times in the survey. I can only guess then, that the next incarnation of the PSP just may have a hard drive included.

What are your thoughts on any addition(s) that would make you head out and pick up another PSP?

I’m really enjoying my PSP right now. That said, I feel if they came out with a more funtional model, I would probably buy it. Hey, people keep buying new iPods when they come out even though they might already have one that works fine.

Most if not all of the things I would like the PSP to do that it doesn’t, would, I’m pretty sure, be doable with firmware upgrades:

    1. Shuffle on a slide show.
    2. Play music from a folder while watching a slide show.
    3. Play movies from the memory stick at full resolution without having to mess with the scaling.
    4. Show art and other song information on all music file types.
    5. Have videos put in the video folder show either a frame from the movie, or be able to show the image of a .jpg with the same name as the movie file.
    6. Show more than one video in a row.

The PSP is a fantastic system, end of discussion. Incredible capabilities and great games make it one of the greatest pieces of technology ever made. That said, I agree that it could easily be improved.

Funny, I’m a GAP member and I haven’t seen that poll… I don’t know what Sony are thinking with the idea of adding a micro HD to a PSP - they have enough problems with battery life as it is, I’d think, and adding a hard drive would be a considerable added drain on the system… It would be substantially smarter - and cheaper - to add maybe 8 or 10 GBytes of flash RAM and partition two to four Gigs of it for system exclusive use… then they could give developers a new compiler with caching logic and wham! a lot of the power and load time problems would disappear with new games… they could even extend rudimentary caching logic into the OS so old games could take advantage of some limited “dumb” caching too..

I agree with mdaddy, most of this stuff can be added to the psp right now with just firmware upgrades, VOiP for example, has been rumored to be available on the psp, so is webcam chat with the upcoming (in the US) camera. Anyways, I would like to see all of these concepts implemented in Sony’s psp, It’d make us happy and Sony would save the money of creating a new psp

mobek is too drunk to think in any of his posts. that said… i think the best upgrade to the psp would be a second joystick on the right side, PS controller style… it is a gaming console. second joystick would increase functionality in games such as socom 2… i hate tryin to walk around in it as it is. hard drive would be nice as well though, and video outs wouldnt be bad either… but put a second joystick on the thing and all the FPS’s out there are gonna be way more fun…. as for the cell phone/voip - i already pay one cell phone bill and it works just fine for me… quite a bit smaller then the psp at that and i dont really think twice about throwing it in my pocket and walking around all day for fear of scratching it to pieces. the keyboard would just make the thing bigger, so how bout make a keyboard/stand designed similar to some of the speaker stand you see out there. that way youd have a close to full sized keyboard and your psp would act more like a computer monitor when surfing the web….
