UMD Movies continue downward spiral

The bad news concerning Sony’s UMD video format keeps rolling in. According to a post over at Joystiq, Target has just announced that they will be removing all UMD Movies from their store shelves. This doesn’t come as a surprise to those in the know, but general consumers may wonder why this is happening. Sony, when will you learn that proprietary formats die a horrible death 9 times out of 10. Users will not pay $25 for a UMD movie when they can buy a DVD for $15 and play it on more then just their PSP.
In Joystiq’s normal tongue-in-cheek fashion, they’ve recommended that we pick up the following titles while they are still around ;)
- Cheaper by the Dozen
- Crash
- Cruel Intentions
- Cursed
- Doom
- Dumb and Dumber
- Gone in 60 Seconds
- Never Die Alone

I reccomend that Joystiq sucks on my balls, while they still can. Anything can happen, you know! :O
Did Sony really think these were going to be a hit? It amazes me sometimes how myopic and clueless some companies can be about these things. Grown men wearing suits that cost more than I make in a month sat down and thought, “Sure, people will pay almost twice the price of a DVD to get a movie that has none of the special features and can only be played on one device.” Unbelievable.

Yeah, seriously, fire these people. On paper, PSP only movies sounds awesome, but not when we can watch it on a screen 20 times as big (more!) in HD too… for cheaper. What the hell?
It’s so much cheaper to just rip a dvd and put it on your memory card. endless # of movies. Besides memory cards have really droped. I picked up a gig for only $25
I have always been suprised at the price of UMD movies, at 5 or 10 pounds (at the most) they would have been popular, but in reality they are a secondary movie format and should have treated as such by sony.
Sony Umd is LAME
