UMD future still doesn’t look good

Next Generation took a look at the recent NPD PSP report and it turns out that the intent to buy UMD content is about 3 times the actual purchase rate which implies that while people want to get UMD movies, there just isn’t enough reason to get them.

While hardcore PSP gamers have long lamented the uselessness of UMD movies, it is interesting to see that many people actually intended to buy them at one point.

One-third of PSP owners who don’t own non-videogame UMD content said that they are likely to purchase a UMD in the “near future”, but on the other hand don’t really care about the format that the content is delivered on. NPD also points out how retailers and studios are steadily dropping UMD support.

The main reason for the lack of sales according to PSP users is the price, followed by the selection. We have all stated many times that if UMD’s were comparable to DVD’s, more people would buy them. Too bad studios never listened to us.
