Flash For PSP Not So Great?

I’ve been noticing a lot of hype about the PSP’s new Flash Player abilities but I feel obligated to point something out. The new 2.70 update adds Flash 6 support which is great and all but Flash 6 is way behind times. ActionScript 2.0, which was a major upgrade to the ActionScript language, was introduced after Flash 6. Most Flash developers use Flash 7 (MX 2004) or even the most recent version Flash 8 and those developers code in ActionScript 2.0. So what does this mean for us common folk? It means that most if not all the current Flash content you’ll find on sites like Newgrounds is not be usable on the PSP.

Flash developers will have to take a step back and recode a lot of their in order to make their content PSP compatible. Ironically, the homebrew Flash player developed by 71M actually supported a large portion of the ActionScript 2.0 language.

The conversion of the flash files isn’t actually hard at all for the developers. Using MX when you save your .fla as a .swf there is an option to save it as a Flash 6 and even Flash 5 versions whisch doesn’t require too much rescripting.

you guys are forgetting one important thing…. that you cannot run the flash files standalone and must be viewed within the psp internet browser. Say goodbye to loading movies and games on you psp. I’m sure half the people with psp’s don’t have wireless internet and those who do can’t be stuffed logging onto the net and wasting bandwith just so we can play flash.
I hope in the future the update developers will fill in many of the gaps and let consumer sovereignty have a fair share of what goes in the updates…
