Did Sony nix all possibility of a Unified Login?

According to OPM (via GamesFirst), online gaming on the PlayStation 3 will be left to the discretion of individual publishers—just like on the PS2. While some may argue that this gives publishers greater freedom to design a unique online experience, it also makes it difficult for Sony to control the quality of that experience. And from a gamer’s standpoint, it’s a real pain in the neck, since each publisher will require its own user account (and possibly fees).
With both the XBOX 360 and the Nintendo Revolution + DS entering the next generation *with* a unified login system, I have a sinking feeling that this might end up being a nail in Sony’s coffin. One of the reasons why XBOX live was so popular was the fact that you only have to sign up for a user id once, and then you can jump into any game supporting live online play. The bonus of having all your friends visible online at the same with was just too good to be true.
Sadly, I have a bad feeling for Sony on this one if this news turns out to be true. As always i’ll update you all on any news regarding the unified login. This is one of the key items that I feel that Sony needs to stay in the game, but sadly this may never happen.

Don’t they realize that the online quotient is booming right now? Jesus, they’re really missing boat here. Xbox Live is going to single handedly destroy the PS3 if Sony doens’t step up to the plate. . .
And what about our little PSP? Where are the online games? Why can’t every developer implement the gamespy tools like they did with Xmen?
Bah Humbug.
I feel that if the Paid XBOX live service doesn’t kill it.. the FREE Nintendo Wifi one will. Hopefully this was just a misquote, but seeing as it came from the Official Playstation Mag, I’m not holding my breath.
Hey, if you listen to the Video Games Show podcasts, then you will know how much they have been whining about the lack of support Nintendo showed for online gaming on the Gamecube, and look how badly that system has turned out, although this is also down to a lack of third party games for the system. Not having online play seems childish because of the increase in people getting online, and to do this properly, the Xbox live model should be used as a starting point.
Well, now that the PS3 will have a decentralised online play system, it will stand little chance against the well-established and easily regulated Xbox live in the online world. I stand as a begrudging Micro$oft fan because of their efforts in revolutionising online console play.
Well, it was nice knowing ya, PS3. Shame Sony can’t win on every front in the video games world but them’s the breaks.
Wow between this and Sony charging for game updates, they are writing out their own death sentence. Sometimes I really wonder about these corporate guys and their decisions.

This basically means that Sony are increasing their anti piracy measures to new heights by locking a copy of a game with a single unit, rendering it unplayable anywhere else. What about playing games at friends’ houses for multiplayer, or perhaps buying a second hand copy of a game? The timing of this purchase of patent indicates that the technology might be included in the PS3.
Sony are increasingly alienating their consumer base as a result of all this. Well, sorry Sony, but I have had enough of your messing around, especially seeing as last week it was revealed that your music division puts unremoveable trojans as part of a DRM onto PCs that play Somy BMG music CDs.
