Sony PSP Media Manager Review

PSP Media ManagerIf you hadn’t already heard, yesterday Sony released PSP Media Manager (called PSPMM for the rest of this review) application. This sync tool will be in direct competition with the already established PSP Sync applications PSPWare and iPSP. Not happy with just reporting the news, I grabbed a copy of this software and gave it a thorough once over, testing all of its capabilities and features. I can say this now, I’m quite impressed.

PSPMM allows Windows-based PSP owners to sync their media files to their PSP with an intuitive 2-pane interface. You can now easily transfer Images, Audio, Movies and Game Saves to and from your PSP. PSPMM adds in the unique and useful feature of RSS parsing. Named “Feeds” in this application, this feature will allow you to easily stay up to date on all your favorite audio Podcasts and video Vidcasts, all through this one program. Prior to this app, I was doing this manually by downloading them through iTunes and doing the old drag and drop. This feature alone will save me a pile of time. I’ll get more into this feature later on in the review.

Let’s go through the tabs corresponding to the individual sync/conversion features one by one.

Photos
PhotosLooking at your favorite images on the PSP is neither new, nor unique. But PSPMM has a couple of features that are different from the norm. Firstly, this application supports images that are formatted as jpg, jpeg, jpe, jfif, png, gif, bmp, dib, tiff or tif. PSPMM can be setup to transfer these over as is, or do on the fly conversion to jpg. I tested the conversion method and it worked well, producing small sized jpg files on my memory stick.

The best feature of the Photos tab has to be its support for PSP Mags. Getting a PSP Mag on your PSP is now as easy as drag and drop. What I did was create a folder on my PC holding all my favorite mags. Once I let PSPMM know of that folder through the “Add a Folder” button, all my mags were listed. I was then able to easily drag the issues I wanted to see to my PSP, no unzipping and windows explorer for me. Very cool.

Music
MusicJust like the Photo section, the music section supports a pile of audio formats. PSPMM has built in support for: mp3, wma, wav, pca, ogg, m1a, mpa, m2a, m4a, m4b, aac and mp4 audio. I know what you are saying, the PSP only supports mp4, mp3 and Atrac! Well just like the images, you can setup an auto convert profile to convert your songs to MP3s on transfer.

This is a nice feature allowing you to transfer any audio you might have on your hard drive or iTunes library. Just a word of warning, this application does not support any protected audio formats. So if you want to use songs that have been bought from iTunes or Napster, well… you are out of luck. This isn’t any different from any of the other sync apps, so I don’t fault PSPMM.

Video
VideoNow this is where PSPMM really shines. Video conversion was always one of the more confusing areas of getting media on my PSP. I’ve used many conversion apps, from Nero to PSP Video 9, all with different levels of success. I’ll tell you now, PSPMM does this right. Included below is a quote from Sony’s website listing all the various supported file types and sizes.

Supported File Formats

Video: mp4, avi, wmv, mov, qt, dv, mpg, mpeg, mpeg1, mpeg2, mmv, m1p, mp1, mp2, m2p, m2t, 3gp, m4v

Video File Size

One minute of video will take approximately 3.5 MB when using the Low AVC setting or 6.6 MB when using the High AVC setting. The following table illustrates how many hours and minutes of video you can fit on common sizes of Memory Stick Duo media:

FORMAT
32MB
64MB
128MB
256MB
512MB
1GB
2GB
Low AVC
(384 Kbps video; 480 Kbps total)
0:09
0:17
0:34
1:08
2:16
4:33
9:06
High AVC
(768 Kbps video; 896 Kbps total)
0:04
0:09
0:19
0:39
1:18
2:36
5:12

So you can see that this beast supports damn near everything. There are a couple things to note however. Firstly, this app will only create AVC formatted videos from your source files, meaning you require 2.0 on your PSP to play these. Secondly, two of my favorite file types aren’t supported. So if you are looking to convert DIVX or XVID encoded avi files, well you are out of luck for now. It has come to my attention that this is not 100% the case. I’ve posted an update at the end of this review

Limitations aside, this is a great video converter. All of the files I tried to convert went across perfectly, with no audio synch problems to be seen. To better show you all how good the avc conversion quality is, I created a small test case. I selected two small video files, the original PSP ad that aired and a user created ad. I ran two conversions, first to AVC High, and then again to AVC low. I’ll list them below for your viewing pleasure.

Original: Download [4.2MB MOV]
High AVC: Download [3.4MB]
Lo AVC: Download [2MB]
Original: Download [3.6MB MOV]
High AVC: Download [7.3MB]
Lo AVC: Download [4.1MB]

CD
Nothing super new or fancy here, this tab will allow you to convert songs that you have on CD to mp3. You can then either store them on your HD for later use, or transfer them to your PSP. PSPMM will query the gracenote CDDB when a CD is inserted to get the song and artist names.

Feeds
VideoI touched on this earlier in the review, and this is the “Killer Feature” that this app offers. If you are like me, you listen to a number of Podcasts/Vidcasts in any given week. Prior to this app I would have to download these in iTunes (my podcatcher of choice) and move them over to my PSP manually. If the file was a Vidcast I would have to run it through PSP Video 9 first, and then transfer it to my PSP.

Now, the process couldn’t be any easier. I can subscribe to my favorite *casts* and PSPMM takes care of the rest. This application contains a built in Directory, but you can also add in your own favorite Podcast feeds manually (which I had to do for the PSP Podcast as it wasn’t listed yet :). This directory/RSS aggregator supports feeds containing audio, video, image and PSP Mags!

Like I said, this is the killer feature and makes this app worth the $19.99 alone. Great job Sony, you have some bright people on your development team.

Game/Backup
These two tabs will simply allow you to back up all your game saves from the PSP to your hard drive, and if you need to transfer already backed up games back to your PSP. I’ve accidentally deleted a memory stick before, so this is a great feature to have. In the options you can also turn on “Back up PSP when connected” to have this done automagically each time you connect your PSP. Simple, yet effective.

So there you have it. A full fledged sync/media management app. I can’t say enough nice things about this product. This product is available for download today from Sony’s site for $19.99. If you would like a boxed copy to be sent to you, you’ll have to wait till December.

More info and Purchase links can be found on Sony’s Media Software Website

Updated November 8th, 2005
Looks like my problems with getting Divx/xviD videos to convert was due to the videos I was using. Depending on the codec for both the audio and video used, PSPMM may convert these properly. Hopefully a future version will increase the compatibility of these types of conversions, but I decided to note this here by updating my review.

System Requirements
I had neglected to include these in the review, but due to a number of emails i’ll include them here. PSPMM requires Windows XP SP1 or greater, .NET Framework SP1 or greater and also that Quicktime 7 is installed if you want to encode AVC videos or playback mp4 audio.

Overall:
This is simply the best Sync application i’ve used. I highly recommend it to anyone who uses their PSP to view a lot of media.

Sounds great where can u get it! :P

Maybe it’s just me, but I found the video conversion to choke on a few files that PSPWare had no problems with.

  4. 4 Dasme

That’s bizarre Chris. What format were the videos you were trying to convert? I probably converted 50 short to medium size files betweeen yesterday and today and only ran into troubles with divx files. Although in talking with one of the Devs, Divx *should* sort of work.. still trying to get that figured out though.

Do you know if this program will supports TV programs recorded with Microsoft’s Media Center computer? I know these files have a .dvr-ms filename and are essentially .wmv files with XML metadata. Sony’s first PSP program, Image Converter 2, supported these files and hopefully their new one will too.

  6. 6 jason@insomniaradio.net

the PSPMM actually takes PSP magazines a step further than what you described.
If the magazine creators make an RSS feed for their zine, guess what? Yep!

The software will download it for you, and transfer it CORRECTLY to your PSP, without you doing a single thing. Now THAT is cool..

I’ve also spoken with a SONY rep and he worked with me directly to make my RSS feed compliant. Word on the street is they’ll also be adding LOAD Magazine and several others to their built in mag directory! WOOT! Props to Sony for supporting this new kind of media.

Anyway, plug this RSS feed into your PSPMM:

This sounds like a great app but sadly im the creative type and have a Mac, can anyone suggest a program that supports the Mac that has all the features of the PSPMM?
    Thanks

  8. 8 Joggl

Do you guys think there’s any chance there will be an OS/X version sometime in the future? I’m currently using PSPWare on my Mac. It works fine, but I’m missing the RSS functions you just mentioned.

  9. 9 Joggl

Oh I just saw Matty T’s post!
Well Matty I’d recommend PSPWare. But as I already wrote, there’s no RSS function included which is sad. I’ll write an email to the developers and ask them if they plan to add this feature in a future version.

Regarding Chris’ comment: were you encoding pretty large files, like 30+ minutes or very high quality files, like HD? If so, the % complete indicator can be a little sluggish. If you can still see a memory stick light flashing on the PSP, the app is still working.

  11. 11 Robert W

The Apple iPod nano with 2GB will store up to 500 songs (AAC). If I spend another $200 on a 2GB memory stick for PSP, how many songs can I store?

  12. 12 Dasme

robert: Depending on the MP3 bitrate you choose you could store anywhere from 400-800 I would think. A standard song size for a 128KBit MP3 would be around 3.5MB, so you can fit a lot of them on a 2 gig card. Of course, your mileage may vary.

  13. 13 Dave Fronsee

What about VOB files. Will it convert those to AVC?

  14. 14 MrKnowItAll

DIVX and any encoding which is enclosed in a standard AVI or WMV wrapper file should be supported, provided the files have .AVI or .WMV file extensions.

    Enjoy.

  15. 15 Deep7dive

I have problem with my old movies made with PSP9, the program can not see them.
Not when they are on the PSP and not in the PC. Any had this problem and found a solution?
The DIVX suport work fina as long he file have the AVI extention

  16. 16 Dasme

Dave Fronsee: This program appears to convert some .VOB files, but as it’s not a listed supported filetype, your mileage may vary. Of course this will only work for non encrypted .VOB files.. no DRM removal exists in PSPMM.

Also I’ve updated the review to note the fact that Divx/xviD conversion does exist in this program. For some reason the videos I tried didn’t work, but was able to get some freshly converted videos to work.

  17. 17 Mike

For some reason I can start the PSPMM program I try and I get a window with the heading PMM.exe- Common Language Runtime Debugging Services in the window it says Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0xfb4 (4020), Thread id=0×9e4(2532). It would help if someone can help me with this crap. I try reinstalling it and nothing.

  18. 18 Mike

I like to convert DVD movie. Can I do it via PSPMM.
Or can I convert vob files created by DVD shrink?

  19. 19 Dave Fronsee

It won’t do VOBs, you still have to use PSP Video 9 to convert them. I bought this thing, but really I only use it to move Pictures and look for Podcasts. Still use PSP video 9 for videos. If you are totally in to Podcasts and like to download magazines like I do, it might be worth $10, but not $20. If it converted VOBs to AVC, it would be worth the $20.

  20. 20 PB

If I create a playlist in Itunes, will this software allow me to autosync with the the created playlist?

  21. 21 t6ue56ue5

in ur thing of the video thing when it says something like 0:17 or something is that 17 mins or 17 seconds????

  22. 22 kevin

    wen does it come out?

  23. 23 kevin

    somebody pleez tell me!!!

  24. 24 psikey

Well I’m converting vobs with no problem.

  25. 25 Tashi

It does convert VOB. PSPMM recognized the disk right away. I’m converting Shaolin Soccer right now.

  26. 26 Nadia

Since the PSP audio supports .wma. Can it play audio books that require Windows Media 10 license acquisition function?

  27. 27 Dasme

    Hey Nadia,

While I haven’t tested this personally, I don’t believe so. From what I can understand, firmware 2.6’s support for .WMA files only included non protected files. I would hazard a guess that this would be a supported function in teh future though.

  28. 28 Udit Budhia

Does the PSP support both Baseline and Main Profile from the H.264 standard.
I am having a hard time to play streams which have CAVLC in it.I know QUICKTIME can only do CAVLC. How does the Media Manager manage to port AVC streams encoded from quicktime to PSP. Can anybody suggest something.

  29. 29 Joey

So if i wanted to convert a mpeg that was around 2-3 hours long would a mem card hold it? and would it work fine?

  30. 30 joe

for every one who dosent think it does .VOB it does

  31. 31 Irving

I tried to convert some DVD movies to take on a trip with me on my PSP. No joy. None of the DVD’s folders come up for conversion. Tried the online tutorial video, read the Help file, but both speak to personal movies or smaller videos. Am Imissing something, or will this software not transfer commercial videos for private use onto the PSP?

    Thank you in advance!

Sorry, I’m not sure what happened with my previous post. Here’s the link: http://www.us.playstation.com/contactus.aspx?id=form

  35. 35 Jason

Has anyone tried to convert M4V file to MP4? I know it says it supports it, but want to see a testimony.

  36. 36 David Leroy

For direct conversions from DVD, try loading DVD43 first. This allows on-the-fly decryption from a DVD source.

  37. 37 steve-o

    bottom line…will it convert dvds???

  38. 38 Jason

Well, don’t buy it. I bought it because it’s suppose to convert M4V files to MP4. It does, just not my iTunes videos which is what I wanted. I waste of $20 that Windows Explorer can do for you for free.

  39. 39 Josh

#38 Comment by Jason They said in the review that it doesnt convert Itunes video. Anyway that require the progaram to remove copy protection which is illegal because it is copyright infringement. So ha You dumb monkey!!!!!!!!

  40. 40 bwood2000

Will it copy itune movies to the psp.

  41. 41 creating_visions

Just use PSP Video 9 to convert video. It’s free and does a great job.

  42. 42 Hank Jonkman

I am having a problem with the “feeds” portion of the program. It works great when I set it up, and downloads the latest podcasts/videocasts that I have subscribed to. But a day or two later I opened up the program, and the feeds section was empty. All of my subscriptions were gone. This happened two times, after going back and re enterign and subscibing to my podcasts. If this is the case, it’s easier just to go to the podcast’s website and download the latest casts…
Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

  43. 43 Scipio

If i buy and download the program, will i have to buy it again to put it on my laptop? I have a portable hardrive i could save it to to move it over but does the exe, if thats what it is, delete itself or anything or require a keycode?

  44. 44 Craig

Slow, no make that pathetically horribly slow. I bought this because I though Sony would have produced a fast, sleek, professional product but it doesn’t come close to the speed or features of the freeware encoding products.

If you’ve used nothing else then maybe you’d think 3.5 minutes waiting to connect to your PSP would be normal but give me a break. Why can’t I convert the video and save it to my hard disk? Why is it so slow to encode compared to other encoders? Why didn’t I flush my $20 down the toilet? If it were free with the PSP I’d complain less and simply delete the software and all the other crap I had to install to get it to work.

    Save your money.

Its slow one because it is converting in high quality. Two because it formats it so there are no problems what so ever.

Nope Just download it again upto 5 times!!

I purchased this product yesterday and have to say I am less than satisifed. My major beef with the program is your PSP needs to be connected to the computer via the USB cable for anything to work with this program. You can’t convert videos or anything else unless the psp is connected to the cable (that is why the cable is included with the non downloadable version).
Secondly encoding times are off the chart. It took me about one hour and fiveteen minutes to convert a thirty minute Simpsons episide I recorded using my Win TV 250 to low AVC. If you look at the above article you will see that unless you have a 1GB memory card you will not be able to convert anything more than a two hour movie or two hours of combined shows, remember a 512 stick really only has about 467kb on it after format.
I have been using PSPware and that has been able to convert up to three hours of video at acceptable quality that fits on a 512kb memory stick with room to spare. Not only was the quatlity just as good as PSPMM but it only took a little over one hour to convert three hours of video. It would have taken me over six with PSPMM.
I purchased this because I read it was a better converter than the other freeware versions out there and I thought it has solved the synching issues inherent in the other converters. That is not the case either. The same synching problems I had with PSPware are also in PSPMM.
I will not comment on the other bells and whistles the program has such as RSS feeds, I have not tried them out yet. I will say if you are considering pruchasing this product for video conversion run away as fast has you can.

  47. 47 Anthony

if you have a video file that does not have a extention maybe it is a divx or xvid
file then could you rename the entire file and at the end of it type.AVI would it convert? Also the files also have MPEG-Layer3 audio is that a problem or would it still
    convert? Answer please Thanx.

  48. 48 jaz

can any one help me. I purchased the psp media manager software yesterday. Have not been able to convert andy videos over. Downloaded them from lime wire. It also wouldnt convert my own dvd over. Only the credits ended up on my psp. Sony is worthless as far as help. they want yor to purchase there tech. sup. in order to get assistance with ther own product.

  49. 49 aaron

Wow, what a terrible product. Worst problems I have ever had with audio being out of sync with the video. It takes hours to encode a film then when you play it the audio is so far out of sync that it sounds like its from a different part of the film.

The sad part is the video looks amazing, but is completely worthless because of the sound. I’m using a PC with a 2.2ghz processor so maybe you need some kind of super dual core processor to get it to work, but I would recommend skipping this software. Its super slow, can’t keep audio in sync with video and Sony won’t refund your $20 when it won’t work.

  50. 50 pspqueen

    Thanks 2 all of u I will save 3O bucks & a lot of head aches ; >

  51. 51 nick

every time my psp comes to the menu it says”setting information is corrupted.press the O button to repair and restore default settings”.i do that and the psp goes blank. i left it on all night one time but it still did not work

  52. 52 Mike

Hey has anyone gotten really spotty video compatibility? Aside from the mp4 variants and mov, the program cannot display anything else. I’ve got a single wmv file, and a single avi file showing, nothing else at all. I tried to throw countless avi files at it, forcibly, but it just spits out an incompatibility warning even if they’ve got the same encoding as that one single avi file that it does display.

What in the blue blazes is going on!?

  53. 53 keifer

is that Busta Rymes in the sony psp video…can anyone tell me?

  54. 54 gman

Sadly it doesn’t support VOB files from DVDs. I’m not talking about encrypted commerical DVDs either I’m talking about DVDs of home movies generated by my Sony brand HD recorder. So much for Sony supporting their own products.

On top of which, while I don’t mind it taking a long time to convert the movie, WHY CAN’T IT CONVERT IT TO THE HARD DRIVE? Write now I have to either leave my PSP plugged in while I wait or I have to go without the memory stick. WEAKSAUSE! It’s really slick but these two features make it unusable for me. :-(

  55. 55 wunch

“Some” XViD files work? It doesn’t recognize any of mine, and in fact if I try to browse certain folders of video on my hard drive, PSPMM always pops up with an error message and crashes to desktop!

Despite what Sony and the review claims, the video compatibility of this product is really bad.

  56. 56 maurice

where can i get or download psp media manager for free

  57. 57 Scott

Is there any way to transfer files to the psp via WIRELESS??? That d be nice

Is anyone having a problem with album art on PSP MM, I can drag and drop them in explorer and my tags go over fine, or if i use sonys SonicStage they get there but kinda defeats the purpose if i have to use another program just for music. Thanks in advance for any help.

  64. 64 Mike K

Any chance this can get a m4v from itunes, from my laptop onto the psp for viewing?

  65. 65 ZephyrWest

    @Mike K

Nope. PSPMM can not convert .m4v files you get from iTunes into a playablel format for your PSP.

  66. 66 GamefreQ

OK first of all, all the podcasts and rss feeds I get can only play audio. when I try video and pictures, it says, The type is not supported or The Content cannot be displayed. Or do you HAVE to have the psp media manager software to display non-audio files?is there a way to ONLY get the software WITHOUT the entire pack for free? I already have a USB cable so I don’t need to buy the entire pack but this sounds really cool. I have a Win98SE, will it work? don’t tell me to upgrade I don’t have money. HELP ME!!!!!!!

can some one tell me where to Sony PSP Media Manager???

  70. 70 Bryan

One thing, never ever buy stuff from itunes and plan on transfering your files to the psp because they will never work because those files (songs videos or what so ever) are protected and will not be able to transfer them to your psp except for their ipod.

  71. 71 Maurice

I am having the same problem Mike had starting the program. I have just purchased Media Manager from the sony website £8 (disgrace!) and its asking me for a for a serial number which it says can be found with the application disc… I downloaded the software off the internet so i dont have an application disk. It tells me that the serial number begins with JV… I cant find any number on my PSP that begins with JV. Can anyone help? tell me where i can find this number? Thanks.

  86. 86 Dasme

Alex @ Mazz, this is a commercial product. There is no legal way to get a free registration code. If you want it, pony up the cash like the rest of us and do the right thing.

  90. 90 Joe

You have to access the email that Sony sent you. It should be the same one that you submitted the purchase with…

Excuse me, but Andy and all with the serial number problem did pay idiot. We just don’t know where to get the serial number. ugh.

  92. 92 LwRedStorm

Pour la lecture des DIVX et XVID, installez tout simplement le pack officiel DIVXpro 6 et cela devrait rentrer dans l’ordre…les vignettes s’afficheront !

  93. 93 lwredstorm

In order to play Xvid / Divx, simply install official divxpro and it will work. If you install others codecs, it won’t work. (Tested only with new version 2.0b od psp media manager)

I have spent 3 hours to found this so…

  94. 94 sudhir

    nice

  95. 95 Mark

Just bought retail copy of PSPMM, installed fine and have also installed latest DiVX codecs from divx.com. Problem is, PSPMM doesnt recognise any of my .avi files! Not even ones straight off my digicam, which I know are .avi and which havent been processed in any way. No, correction, it flashes up the .avi files briefly in the PC window then they mostly disappear. Only some remain. However, there is absolutely no difference between the .avi files that remain and the ones that appear then disappear. They were all from the same source, similar size and none of them have been processed post-source. What gives?!

  96. 96 lwredstorm

I had the same problem like you Mark. I solved tike this : i uninstall Xvid codec 1.1.0 and I install DivxCreate which contains Divx 6 pro, divx player, and divx converter (i only keep divx 6 pro and player which register divx correctly to Windows XP).

    Good luck.

Now PSP media manager list all avi (divx / xvid files) and keep them in the list (lol).
    Good luck

Try to uninstall all your videos drivers and do this.
For mp3, I use FHG Radium codec).

A (poor english, sorry, from France)

  97. 97 lwredstorm

Try uninstall all your video codecs (xvid 1.1.0 interfer lot)
Then install DivxCreate with divx 6 pro driver and divx player (which register the driver correctly with Windows registry).

It works for me with this except if xvid 1.1.0 is installed.

    Good luck

  99. 99 nick

i downloaded psp media manager for free, and it’s working, so ya’ll just shut up , it does work when you download it for free.

  100. 100 Adam

I have tried the Sony product., It sucks. Before you delete this, let me explain.
The encoding to mp4, does not always work. The previously trans coded files (psp9) can play no problem on the psp, but the Sony media manager doesn’t even see the file. Even after it was an mp4 (I even tried to transcode the vid using the sony app, but it wouldn’t load. or play) (same video transcoded by psp9 played perfect)

This has the ring of “planned incompatibilities”. So I tried psp_max_media_manager_-_convert___transfer_movies_to_psp_.exe. just Google it and you’ll find it. The basic version is free, the pro version upgrade is like 14$. This program works extremely well for managing all of the types of media I’ve tried so far.

Although I really thought the sony product would do the job, the number of files it didn’t see was frightening. (they just don’t show up in the list) The speed of the updating the file list was also extremely slow.

On the bright side, the Sony interface looked really cool. So, save your 20 bux and buy a burger. If your hardcore with the trans coding, psp9 works very well, or try the upgrade for max (by codejunkies.com) I haven’t needed to buy the upgrade (yet)

I’ll probably try the sony product again after it matures a bit. but for now, psp max is far, far better.and for free!
    My 2 cents

    ..Adam

  101. 101 Adam

ps. you can do all the trans coding off line with psp max (see above post)
    ..a

  102. 102 Athar

I’ve used PSPManager 1.0 and upgraded when they allowed the ability to encode files without needing the PSP to be attaached. I like it because it’s simple. It’s slow and a little buggy but I’ve never come across a problem with the encoding. I mainly encode VidCasts (dl.tv, mobuzztv, rocketboom, psphacking101 etc). But for something to easily transfer photos/music/documents/videos/gamesaves and do my podcatching this is a pretty decent app.

I have tried using other podcatchers and PSP Video 9 but PSPVideo9 didn’t automatically pickup mp4 and quicktime files which some VidCasts use (i.e. PSPHacking101).

I hope Sony update their media manager but since it took them a year to update from 1.0 to 2.0 I ain’t holding my breath.

Take care and hope you all have a great year.

  103. 103 meeeeee

when i put normal dvds into the computer and try and put them onto my psp it wont work and after 4 hours it has only encoded 2% without even putting it onto my psp.
what can i do to put a movie on my psp from media manager?

  104. 104 Damon

    Mark & Adam

Sounds like this version of PSPMM is not working very well when it comes to recognizing existing video file types … Is that a true statment?

Adam - The other option you noted above, does it conver DVD to PSP and M4V to PSP?

    Thanks!

  105. 105 N/A

can i get this program anywhere for free

  106. 106 N/A

or does anyone have the serial number of PSP Media Manager 1.0

  107. 107 E

If you have problem encoding DivX avi do this and it may work. It did for me.

Got to Start > DivX > DivX Codec > Decoder Configuration Utility

In Decoder Configuration Utility go to Playback and you should see Post processing level. Change Automaic Deblocking to Off then press Ok.

There you’r done. Now try to encode, if it dosen’t work see if you have other codecs blocking DivX.

hey i have a problem with mm. i downloaded and installed it however upon opening it it asks for a serial number which is located on a disc. i never got a disc, i tried the serial number found under the battery pack but it didnt work, can someone plz giv me a way to get a serial number so i can use media manager, thanx.

  111. 111 Ice Cream is good

    I have PSPMM 2.0.
    Don’t bother getting it.

After reading all of your comments, I found that the problems are the same. It hardly recognizes my mp4 videos, and has only transfered one so far. Many times the program would not even open. Other times, what I have on my 2 gig memory card does not even show up on the program.

It transfers my music fine, but I have to reopen the program just to see all of my music on my PSP most times.

There is no customer service. It took me two days to access a live person for help, and they still continued to say that they were not aware of any of the problems that any of you or myself was commenting on.

If you do purchase it, go to a retailer so that you have a chance to at least get your money back.

  112. 112 quintez

can 1 one of you PLEASE give me the serial number to pspmm 1.0

  113. 113 Adam

Hey Guys, sorry I’ve been sick.

I haven’t tried direct dvd to psp transcoding. Most of the vids I want to put on the psp are divx that I’ve received from one source or another.

I did notice that the free version psp Maxx manager had a small bug in the options that has recently been fixed. What I had to do was reinstall the earlier version, then accept the new automatic upgrade. Now its working smoooooth. (the previous update was crashing when you selected ‘options’.)

I did get a response from the “SONY” guys (2-3 days wait) and their suggestion was to transcode at less than 700 for a bit rate. I didnt mess with the bit rate at all on the psp9 transcodes and even huge files seem to work pretty sweet. IE: demo of My superx gf was 1.1 gb in divx, transcoded to under 1 gb and played perfect. (which was awesome as we had a 2 hr power outage right after I got it to the psp. So we sat huddled around the psp watching it till the power came up.) I looove my psp.
The MAxx media manager again, had zero issues with seeing, transferring or working with any files I’ve put to it so far. I may have to spring for the 14$ upgrade to the pro version…I just don’t have a use for the extra features yet.

Quintez..why rip off a useless program when there is a much better alternative that costs nothing?

Just some more fyi for ya

  114. 114 br1stolboy

    Hi guys…
My wife has just bought me a new sony PSP, i have installed the media manager etc etc and have this running. I am how ever, having great difficulty in downloading games onto it?
I have downloaded some games from my download site… extracted the image files, i have also gone into my sync folder, and created file named GAME, and dropped the game files into this folder.. then when i sync my psp upto my media manager, i can see it transfering date onto this psp… but when it finishes, it shows its used up something like 160mb of memory… and when i click across to game / data it says nothing is stored, yet its taken up the memory? can someone please tell me what the heck i am doing wrong, and why these games are transfering to psp but not showing on psp?

my wife has spent well over £200 now for this psp, and so far, i have not managed to get one game to load onto this system? through media manager…. please please please, can someone help a newbie to the psp in how where when why answers into putting games onto psp from computer via usb connection using media manager…

pleaseeeeeeeee help me, any replys can be sent direct to my email address at br1stolboy @ hotmail .com please can someone just spend 10 mins to help me figure out what i am doing wrong and help me out… many thanks

    br1stolboy

    Keep up the gaming.

  115. 115 Adam

    Heya,

I believe the psp is intentionally adjusted to make sure you cannot play a downloaded disk image game. If you have the umd of the game, it will play.

There are bios hacks that will put a different operating system on the psp to allow you to play games, but I have no experience with them. I only use my psp for vids because most of the game suck (my opinion.. street supremacy is one such game that is supposed to play head to head, and even with 2 legit copies of the game it will not play as advertised.)

It is exactly this kind of shoddy programming that makes people choose to rip off games rather than buy them… are you listening EA Games???

    ..Adam

  116. 116 hannah

    I’m pissed.

I bought the Media Manager right after I received my PSP. I had to wait till I got my memory card though, so I borrowed a friend’s for a day. At first I was a little confused by the application, but I got familiar with it and downloaded a podcast onto my friend’s card. It worked. So I deleted the podcast (it was a video), then I got my memory card and NOW IT DOESN’T WORK. It says something like the encodes don’t work and “Application Key not allowed.”

My friend told me to use PSP Video Express.. it can’t convert m4v format, but it does convert videos a lot faster and easier. I’m using it temporarily until I can figure out something else for my podcasts.

    Help?

  117. 117 Adam

    Heya Hannah

Try formatting your new card with the application you are trying to use.
I use pspMaxx (freeware) but I have heard that sometimes the cards have a bad format.
If nothing else, you can be sure your using a fresh format on the card.

The other thing that may be happening is the version of the software you are using may have had its application key used by someone hoping to rip off the app. In this case it would be you they are ripping off. One other possible explaination may be that if you did a “live” update on your software, the update may be bad, or it may believe that the key has been exploited.

The card itself should be interchangeable without any issues. I have used my cousins card to get some saved games and it read/worked no problemo.

    Just some thoughts.

    ,,A

  118. 118 Kenny

I have just purchased a PSP and the PSPMM. I just downloaded a music video to the memory card and it took 4 minutes and 34 seconds. Is this normal? Is there some other way to download videos and movies to the PSP faster? I haven’t even attempted to download a movie yet, I think it might take most of the day.

  119. 119 sasquatch44

what the hell is the serial number for media manaer 2.0 it starts with jv

  120. 120 Alex

It seems that that PSP Media Manager has trouble noticing some of the files that the older PSP Max Media Manager accepted. When I added my folder with movies it the program only saw half of them. Some of those it did not see I was able to successfully convert to PSP format with the older program.

Also, does the program support videos with an AC3 audio codec? It did not list it as one of the accepted sound files and it does not notice those videos. Im using PSPMM 1.0 does 2.0 fix these problems? I find it very depressing that Sony’s new program is actually more complicated than its older one. I had no problem using the PSP Max Media Manager. You had more options there like video quality, encoding format (mp4 or avc) screen width (Wide or Square) and all those features affected the rate of encoding. This program only has two options (high or low) and it does not recognize the movies I want to convert!!!.

Why didnt Dasme mention this at all? I find it highly unlikely that PG Revolution never heard of the original sony program. Anyone back me up here?

  121. 121 Alex

Sorry Adam, I did not notice you spoke at length on PSPMMM already. Yeah I guess we have the same issues. Im just upset that this program got a 9 from what I considered an unbiased source when it obviously has issues.

Maybe it just has some sort of protection from pirated files or whatever. I dont know, Im still using PSPMMM

  122. 122 Dasme

    Alex,

First off the PSP Max Media Manager is not a Sony product, it was Datel who released it. This review for Sony’s Media Manager is well over a year old. Sadly this product did not age well, and the functionality added in version 2.0 is minimal at best and does not encourage people to pay for the upgrade.

When reviewing and rating this product I stuck to syncing the video formats that were stated as supported. I saw no need to try and force it to transcode DivX/XviD or any other non-supported file formats, as they were just that … NON-supported. DVD ripping was never listed as a feature either.

If I was to review this product TODAY the result would be very different. There are many other free and pay software packages out there that will rip your DVDs or convert your DivX files… Sony has no reason to support this though as those formats and functionality are seen as more of a “Pirate” use. I don’t agree with that, but that is how it is. It’s also the reason why you’ll never see a DVD player form SOny that supports DivX files directly like some of the no-name DVD players do.

I take offense with your statement that this was a biased review, as it wasn’t. It’s simply a case of a review early in the products life cycle. I can’t factor in things that it “shoulda” supported, because it was outlined in the manual and online info just what types of video it would support.

    Lloyd Hannesson (Dasme)

  123. 123 Adam

    Good Day All,

I have to agree with Dasme and to a point disagree. I use divx to encode video’s of family weddings, sports events and a ton of other non pirate events. Its a good format that has a purpose like many other things in the world that can be used for the wrong purpose as well. (anyone here drive a car?…cars can run over people when used irresponsibly)

I do agree about the Sony software. When I got my psp, I really wanted to stick with the sony product because I bought the sony product. I was also dismayed when the software aged soooo poorly. But the Software does what the review stated it would do. This is a failing in the foresight of the programmers, not the review.

Kenny, you fail to mention a couple of small details. How big is the video?..are you using usb1 or 2? (usb1 =2 Mbit, usb2=400 Mbit, big difference usb2 is about 200 times faster than 1)

One last thing, please stop asking for pirated serial numbers. NO ONE will supply you with thus. The purpose of these kinds of discussion areas are to help other users and be productive, not rip people off.

Hey Dwaine How do you encode your Movies. I use DivX and its alrite it should work for you

  138. 138 Adam

The sony product is not available for free download.
The psp media manager called pspMAXX is available for a free download.
The MAxx product is being developed by codejunkies.com and I have had a very good experience with it. This is a Daytel product.

Any keys you find for the sony product are probably useless. Even if they install its likely that the install key that you downloaded wouldn’t survive an update to the software. If you want to use the sony product, pay the 20 bucks. I have paid the 20 bucks, and I still use the Daytel product. Earlier posts by me listed above will tell you how to view your movies on the psp. There is no direct divx support that I have found so far. This could change if sony decides to include the divx codecs.

Please stop asking for install keys for those that are asking. It cheapens you.

    Hey Colleen,

There is probably a .msi program on your disk.
This is the updated version of the winblows installer program.
If you google .msi your bound to find what your looking for to get this program to work.

    ..A

  141. 141 Adam

    Hey All,

News update for all your transcoding needs. I recently found a program called “Super” Its an open source project, so its totally free, but it transcodes like there is no tomorrow.

I was looking for a program to transcode a video to my new cell phone that touts that you can watch a full length video on it’s stamp sized screen. Knowing that I only needed to find out the codec used by my phone to be able to utilize the senseless waste of resources, I started digging.

Now, not only does this program convert .avi to 3gp as used by my phone, it will also convert to psp Ipod and pretty much every other known format. It comes complete with all of the codecs required and has a limited, but built in media player as well.

If your serious about using your psp to watch your favorite movies, or clips or other media, this is a must have application. It transcodes better than what I personally experienced with psp video 9 and better than pspMAXX. Although I still use MAXX to actually transfer the files to my psp. You can get the “Super” program here.. http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html#Dnload

Now I have to go buy an even bigger memory stick for my psp :P

    ..Adam

  142. 142 eraOz

Hi, I heard that PSPMM is now available free. can someone tell me where to get it from please?

  143. 143 Dee

Thank you Adam with that great info about the PSP max media manager. I just downloaded it and it works fine.

To everyone who wants to put music, videos etc onto their psp try this, you will not have to spend $20 on a software that is not needed at all lol…

Before you do the steps below remember you will have to format your memory stick first if you have not done that once already.

1: Connect your PSP and Computer together with your USB cord.

2: Turn on your PSP and go to Settings, then go down and click on USB Connection.

    3: Open your Documents folder.

4: Type E:\ into your address bar and It should send you to your psp folders.

5: Then for example you wanted to put music onto your psp. In ANOTHER folder find the folder where all your music files are and copy the music you would like. Then go to the PSP file and paste the music into the folder that is called MUSIC.

Then it should be on your PSP. I hope this helped and it worked for you because it worked for me plus it’s FREE and you won’t have to download anything onto your computer.

    bye xx

Worked great for about two months. What the hell happend? Wasted about six hrs yesterday trying to fix this and both systems give me the same issue.
