I’ve owned pretty much every portable gaming system at one time or another. One of the first accessories that you see in stores is a magnifying glass of some type or another. With the huge size of the PSP’s screen I thought that trend might of skipped this generation, I guess I was wrong. Brando was listing a device called the PSP Light Magnifier, and I decided to give it a go.

Brando Light Magnifier

The name Light Magnifier is a little bit misleading as it does not contain a light. With the backlit screen of the PSP, I don’t think one would of been necessary though. This magnifying glass connects to the back of the PSP with 2 clips sitting in the screw holes on top, and 2 clips fastening it to the bottom of the PSP. Unfortunately this device totally blocks the UMD door, making removal necessary when you would like to change games. The magnifying glass folds over the screen, and advertises a 1.6x magnification level. When it’s not in use and has been removed from the PSP the magnifying glass folds under the hinge arm and is protected from any accidental damage, which is nice.

This device does exactly what it is advertised to do, that is magnify the screen. I was initially taken a little aback at the difference; 1.6x does not sound that large or that big of a difference. I was worried about distortion due to movement, but the device performed well both watching the Spider-man 2 UMD and playing Wipeout. My only major complaint with this device is the little bit of distortion you get around the edges of the PSP screen. The magnifying glass sits about 3 inches or so from the screen, and is maybe an eighth of an inch too small all the way around. This small size problem ends up causing some distortion on the edges which was a little bit annoying at first. I got used to it in time, but it would of been nice to not have to worry about this.

Brando Light Magnifier

The PSP Light Magnifier sells for $10 on Brando’s website which is a fair price for what it does. I found that it was great for watching movies allowing me to place the PSP on a table or my lap and have the screen size look the same as when it’s being held in my hands. I would probably use this device a little bit more if it didn’t block the UMD door, or allowed me to still use the Brando PSP Rechargeable Grip. Hopefully later products will refrain from blocking the UMD door, as that is one major fault seen in many early PSP accessories.

Pros:
1.6x magnification is great for watching movies.

Cons:
Slight distortion on the edges.
Blocks the UMD door.

Overall: 6 out of 10

I’m always looking for new accesories for my PSP and I get excited to see a new review posted on the PGR homepage. You seem to have reviewed everything I wouldn’t ever try, and everything I use now. I think you really do a great job, first revealing all the flaws and telling me how I could actually use it if I picked one up. Once again, good job, keep it up!

Hi, I am looking for a similar accessory for my Nokia N80, which, as you know, has a small screen but high resolution. Thus, I hope to have a magnifier for me to enjoy the high resolution when browsing the net.

    Thanks.
    Dennis
